Wonderful Trip to Lake Michigan !

We went to South Haven Michigan for vacation.
Lake Michigan is so beautiful . The water can be
very cold but it was nice when we went (late August).

Hotel:

I used Priceline for the first this trip. I did alot
of research on prices and places but to be honest
it was overwhelming! I bid too low at first trying
$50 and then , being tired of looking, I increased
my bid to $70. I ended up with 4 night for just
under $300 (after taxes).

Food:

Breakfast -

free at the hotel :)

Lunch -

Deli fresh sandwiches , lunchables &

chips , fruit ..typical lunch box items

Dinner -

Hotel had a fridge & microwave.

We ate in at least 2 nights having

Brats, pizza rolls , eggrolls (me)

We ate at Applebees on kids eat free night .

We had pizza at a local parlor , yum!

Entertainment :

Our trip was 6 days long (not a full week , my
son had school orientation so we had to leave
on Monday morning).

I splurged on entertainment and it was worth it.
The duck ride starts as a land tour and then a water
tour. It brings up its wheels and then floats. How
cool is that ?? The Dune ride was a blast. It was like
a rollercoaster without a track......Awesome !
The boat ride was just absolutely gorgeous !!

This trip was all about the kids . I did whatever they
wanted. Honestly they would have been happy in the
Hotel pool though , lol.

Interesting Walmart Tidbit

I was looking on the Walmart website and noticed the shower
curtain I just bought was $4 cheaper online. I called Walmart
to see what to do and they said they do not price match their
online store ....ok ? She said that Walmart prices are always
cheaper online. She also told me it is better to buy online and
have it shipped to the store (free shipping to store). Hum??

I had (2) $4 off coupons for the Fusion Proglide razor. I went to Walmart and was disappointed because the razor was priced at $9.99. I didn't think it was much off a bargain to pay $6. Then I remember reading that some of the sets were clearanced priced. I took the gift set to the scanner to price check. I was surprised that it was $6 because it was clearly not marked on sale ! So be on the look out for these. It's a nice value at $2. It includes body wash , deodorant, Proglide razor, and cooling lotion.

Not sure if this a local deal but you may want to price check this set. The coupon was from the

August P&G and expires 8/31.

The coupon fairy left a $4 coupon . That is how I ended up getting 3 sets !

for it ! Giant Eagle is offering .15 off per gallon when buying $20.00
worth of "select" items. In this picture I earned .30 !

**This was last week's ad . There is a similar offer this week .
    The "select" items have changed though ***

Total spent was $62.57.   I earned .50 off per gallon of gas in this shopping
trip. I earned .30 from the deal above and .20 for spending over $50
( this trip plus reaching $50 from my previous trip) .

If you haven't heard,

Walmart has a new coupon policy out. You will now receive the

full value of your coupon . What this means to you is that

you will get to spend the overage on other items or actually

get money back ( I think) .

That being said here is what happened when I had overage:

I had a $3 off coupon for the Purex. The travel size was .97.

The cashier had to push the coupon through . I was in fear

that I would be scolded for trying to use the coupon on a

travel size. Lucky for me she didn't look or maybe care :)

Others have reported using this coupon successfully but YMMV!

Also , I had an overage of $1.28. The register alerted the
cashier to call the manager. This made me really nervous.
Yes, I was chicken to test the new coupon policy. I was in
no mood to have to battle this out if need be. Soooo , I
grabbed some Mentos and avoided the dreaded manager.
I know I know ....I'm a chicken ..lol !

I was really lucky to get a BZZZ campaign for Thomas Bagel Thins .
I wanted to try these but hadn't had a chance. I am glad I finally
tried them. They are really good ! You can use your imagination
and put any combination on them . I liked cream cheese and
strawberry jelly on mine . Yum !

They are only 110 calories

A Lunch Break with My Kids

Dining cheaply with the kids:

I wanted to get the kids out of the house. They had
Monday and Tuesday off but we were kind of snowed
in. They were ~~a little~~ stir crazy. I promised them we'd
go out for lunch.

The kids picked Wendys to dine at. I looked
in my Entertainment book and found 2 useful coupons.
I went to a Wendys that had a giant Eagle and Speedway
near so that I could multitask.
Here is what we got:

Remember what I picked up at Goodwill ? here
I knew I liked the 2 rooster containers alot!
When I brought them home I realized I had the
matching soap dispenser and soup terrain.

I shopped at Sparkle market the other day. I found

Bob Evans roll sausage (sage only) on sale for .99 !

Great price on its own so I grabbed some. I bought 5

and paid $4.95. I called later when I got home and

explained that I had forgotten my coupons. The

manager said I could come back with them! Woohoo !

I came back with the coupons and got $2.50 back.

What a deal ! Don't be afraid to ask. I'm glad I did !

I was able to buy Sunday's paper at CVS for .25 a piece on

Sorry about the lack of posts but I am not feeling too thrifty
these days ! My entire family was in a wedding out of town
a few weeks ago and as you know that can get pretty expensive.
My daughter's birthday was yesterday and I have promised to
take her to Dave and Buster (not frugal at all). I also spent
way too much for her gifts. I bought way more than I needed to.

Money is just flying out the door lately ! I just wanted to
be honest and accountable for my spending.
Hopefully I will get back on track.

Yummy Chicken Tortilla Soup Recipe !

I cut this out of a magazine recently. I don't know which
magazine to give credit too...sorry !

I made this Monday. It was just one of those soup days .
My husband and I loved it. It was alittle too spicey for the
kids though so next time I will substitute the Ro-tel with a
can of diced tomatoes.

you will need:

1 onion
2 cans chicken broth
1 can diced tomatoes with chilies
2 cups chopped cooked chicken
4 sm. tortillas, cut into 1/2" wide strips
2 tbs. chopped fresh cilantro (didn't use in mine)

In pot, heat 1 tbs oil over med-high heat. Add
onion; cook, stirring occasionally until just
softened, 2-3 minutes. Add broth, tomatoes
with their juices and 2 cups of water; bring to a
boil. Cover over low heat, simmer 20 minutes,
adding chicken during the last 5 min. Meanwhile
in a lg. nonstick skillet, heat 2 Tbs of oil over med.
heat. Add tortilla strips in batches; cook, turning
when golden brown, 3 min. Drain on paper towels.
Remove soup from heat. Stir in cilantro. Serve
garnished with shredded cheese, sour cream and
tortilla strips.

Yum!

Not a Walmart Fan!

My Walmart never has the great roll back prices everyone else has.
I always get disappointed when I go there! Anyways, I keep having
faith and each time I'm disappointed again.

I went to get Ziploc bags, cheese and razors. I couldn't find the bikini
shavers that would have been free so I bought a couple 4 pks for .97
each after my $2 coupon. Why did I want the Ziploc bags? They were
about $1.25 after my coupon. This was not that great a deal . I left those.

The cheese ! The cheese ! The cheese ! I knew the $5/5 would be
a problem. I hate my Walmart !!!! Coupon haters! Ughhhhh. I had
to do 2 seperate tranactions because the cashier told me I couldnt
use 2 coupons. Ok...whatever. She said the coupon says I can only
use one coupon and thats why it beeped. Ok. Then she looked at
my razor coupon and said I needed a seperate transaction for that
too. Again she said that the coupon said I could only use one.
I looked at the coupon and I told her it says 1 coupon per inteneded
item. So I could use 2 because I was buying 2. Nope no go. How
dumb is that ? She said something about fraud and internet coupons
...blahblahblah.

soooo.......2 transactions later !

10 bags of shredded cheese
2 4/pk Noxema razors
2 Tropicana Lemonades

I paid $14 . The cheese was on sale for $2 a bag. I got them for $1
each after my coupon. I have two more $5/5 coupons but I know
if I go back to Walmart there will be more drama !

Well the pans were not technically in the mail. This is my Kohl's order
I had told you about. I will have paid $8.36 for theses after my mail
in rebate.

I got a rebate from Kellogg's for trying the Cinnamon Flakes.
The rebate was for $1.99. I think this is what I paid after my
coupon. That's disappointing Most rebates are before coupon !

Preparing for School Lunches

This was a pretty slow week for me. Nothing seemed
too exciting. Here are the best deals I found this
week.

Marc's had a deal on Poptarts. They had
3 boxes wrapped together for $3.68. I had
$1.50 of 3 so I paid $1.68 . That makes
each box about .60 each! I bought 3 of the
3 pks (9 boxes of 8ct. Poptarts).

**Bonus**

There is a $1/1 coupon on the bottom of the
3 pk !

Also I was able to get a free movie ticket
by entering 5 unique codes found inside
the Poptart boxes !!!

My Budget Friendly Vacation and How you can do Better Part II

Food:

I had a box that I started putting food items in to take
with us. I put things like tuna, mac-n-cheese, noodles,
Cereal . I also brought my rice cooker and rice.

I went on restaurant.com and found a couple restaurants
in the area...paid only $2.80! One was for The House of
Blues. We highly recommend this....Yum!

I cashed in some points from Mypoints for a $10 Subway
giftcard. I brought a couple giftcards as well that we
received as gifts. I went on their websites to see if I could
find any coupons and also checked their menus. Its good
to have a plan before going. Remember order water when
possible. This is a huge savings as drinks can cost well over
$2 ...yikes! That's a $8 savings for us.

The biggest money saver was planning a few meals at home.
The place we stayed at (Barefoot Yacht Club) had a kitchen
loaded with pans, dishes, etc. I had a couple Kroger gift
cards I was saving so we went and grabbed some groceries.
I also used the Kraft coupons I received in the mail for free
items.

We saved money unexpectedly too ! My mother in law
surprised us with a couple 12 packs of pop, beer, chips,
poptarts!! Wasn't that nice ? My mom also packed fruit
and sandwiches for the ride.

How you can do better :

I think we did pretty well on our food budget.

You could purchase an entertainment book for
the location you are traveling to. They are
usually cheaper this time of year since they
are close to expiring in November.

Bring your coupons with you on your trip .
You never know what you may find you need.
I brought mac-n-cheese but had to go buy
butter to make it. I had to pay full price for
it.

Load up on drinks ! It was so hot and we went
through alot of water. On the way home we
stopped frequently for drinks. It would be a
good idea to bring refillable bottles.
